At a time in history when China is assuming an increasingly central role in our lives, the new edition of the selection Sinophonies: Films in Chinese Languages aims to overcome the stereotypical and often simplistic image of “Chineseness,” understood as a monolithic and monolingual entity. To this end, the selection presents short films made by Chinese-speaking filmmakers from not only mainland China, but also from peripheral and marginal geographic and linguistic realities. The films explore territories and cultural formations that reinterpret their relationship with contemporary and past China, such as Hong Kong and Taiwan, and recount experiences of migration abroad. The selection is curated by a team of sinologists, mediators and professors of Chinese language and culture: Sabrina Ardizzoni (University for Foreigners of Siena), Clara Longhi (University of Bologna and University SSML Carlo Bo/IULM Milan, cinema expert and collaborator of numerous festivals in Italy and China), Federico Picerni (University of Bologna), Valeria Zanier (University of Bologna). Sinophonies is produced in cooperation with the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures of the University of Bologna. For the second consecutive year, a competing film will be translated by a group of students from the University of Bologna, who will also participate in the jury for the awarding of the prize. To emphasize this link with Bologna’s modern language department, the Sinophonies selection will be screened this year in a different context: we see on May 8, 4 p.m. at the DAMSLab theater in Bologna.
