Colors of the Earth
Once again this year the Ennesimo project has obtained the Patronage of ASI, the Italian Space Agency. A shared journey with the intent of remarking on the importance of science imaging education, a journey that began last year with Alessandro Coletta, an expert in satellite remote sensing and continues this year with Maria Virelli, Mission Manager of the COSMO-SkyMed Satellite System of the Italian Space Agency.
Colors of the Earth The Earth from space appears as a sphere colored by various shades of Color. Today, thanks to satellite technologies, we can observe the Earth from distant perspectives, yet with extremely high definition, so much so that we can make out important details of our planet. Italy has built and launched into space one of the most advanced Earth observation satellite constellations in the world: COSMO-SkyMed. It is a constellation of 6 radar satellites, operated by ASI in collaboration with the Ministry of Defense. COSMO- SkyMed from the height of about 600 kilometers, is able to acquire images of our planet in any atmospheric situation and lighting condition. The acquired data provide a fundamental contribution to multiple issues, including emergency management, assessment of the effects of climate change, monitoring of agricultural crops, control of forest and woodland heritage, and protection of cultural heritage, estimation of even millimeter changes in terrain and infrastructure.
MARIA VIRELLI Mission Manager of the Italian Space Agency's COSMO-SkyMed Satellite System, Italy's largest space investment ever, consisting of a constellation of 5 Synthetic Aperture Radar Satellites dedicated to Earth Observation. She has published numerous scientific and technical articles in both national and international journals, is coauthor of the first known atlas of terrestrial meteoritic impact craters, Encyclopedic Atlas of Terrestrial Impact Craters, published by Springer, and the volume Adriatic.Winter Sea, an editorial, cultural and territorial project that chronicles the long Adriatic ridge in an extended narrative of timely stories and destinations, with multidisciplinary readings and viewpoints, to capture in the ordinary winter sea the experience of extraordinary knowledge.
